I find it amazing that the King of Kings was born in a stable where the smells were less than glorious.
Why would God stoop down that low and allow the birth of His Son to be in such a place?
I believe there are a number of reasons for this beginning:
Many people had come from afar to Bethlehem because of the census that Caesar Augustus had ordered. It was not optional and even Mary, being great with child, did not have the option to stay home. God definitely wanted to control who was invited to the birth of His Son. Bethlehem was bustling like a Mall at Christmas Time. So many people were there and being so great with child, Joseph and Mary were probably among the last to arrive since they had to take the trip slower than most. So, of course, the Inn was full when they finally did arrive. But this was God’s plan all along.
When you become a dad for the first and only time, you only want people at the birth who you have chosen. At the Inn, many people could have just dropped in on Mary and Joseph’s room after she had the baby. But God wanted to do His own inviting to this Most Amazing Event that was heralded by a Great Company of Angels singing in Luke 2:8-15. The entire event is told in Luke 2:1-52. God was so excited at the birth of His Son that even Heaven was bursting with the news of Jesus’s birth. And God sent His angels to announce the birth of His Son to the shepherds out in the field watching their flocks by night. That later would be Jesus’ profession, a shepherd of the lost sheep of the Earth needing to be guided home again. Animals and shepherds were the invitees to this glorious event on the Earth and in the sky a host of angels were encamped around beholding God’s only son.
Jesus is also called the Lamb of God in John 1:29, 36. Where would you expect a lamb to be born? In the Inn or out with the other animals? Jesus would soon enough take on the role described in the Old Testament of a spotless innocent lamb to be sacrificed for the sins of the guilty people so that they could be atoned for in the eyes of a perfect God. Oh how precious was that first night to God!
This Earth is unclean and God stooped down from the glory of a pure Heaven to be born in this messed up place to seek and save those that are lost. How profound is that? Only God could and would write a story like that! And if God would send His perfect Son from Heaven to a troubled planet full of death and corruption called Earth, this is the demonstration of what God the Father did to seek and save you. The Bible calls this LOVE. This is where the LOVE of God began his work.
When Herod found out that the Wise Men came to see this new born “King of the Jews”, he was furious to find out that someone would soon take his place. So he sent to have all the male children under 2 years old put to death. The devil has had all people under his control since the Fall of Adam and was not happy that the Son of God, announced by the Wise Men, was here to possibly somehow reverse the curse that Satan had brought over all mankind through spiritual and physical death. Adam and Eve were no match for Satan but the Son of God–He was another story altogether! THE BATTLE WAS ON!
Herod figured killing all the male children would take care of his problem before “this child” could grow up. But God…..
That is all you need to defeat the devil in every area of your life. When you even think if a problem that you seem to be in a battle with, always remember to include at the end of your thinking and speaking “But God…” God and you can defeat the devil at every turn and God is serious about getting involved in every battle you are facing both now and in the future. Let’s see how this battle went with Jesus to see how our’s is going to go.
Jesus grew in wisdom and stature with God and man. After Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist, then came the temptations by the Devil, himself, to cause Jesus to sin and become subject to him also just as Adam had done. But as we read in Luke 4, Jesus did not take the bait that Satan offered, and He remained true to God the Father. Then Jesus’ public ministry began. As is written in Luke 4:18-19 Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
And this began his ministry and for the next 3 1/2 years he did many mighty works (just for fun read Luke 4:1-44, Luke 51-39).
Satan became so furious that he knew the only way to stop Jesus was to put together a scheme to kill him. But little did Satan know that Jesus took our place in dying as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” John 1:29. And that is just what Jesus did. Then he went to Hell on our behalf for 3 days, and then He was risen from the dead! Why, because he had to pay our sin debt, our Hell debt, (yes our Hell debt–that is the consequences for even one sin committed by you or me) and yet he had done nothing wrong! God placed our sin on Jesus as our innocent sacrificial lamb, and God took Jesus’ right standing before God and placed it on us. Christianity is known as the Great Exchange. Oh what a wonderful Savior! When God raised him from the dead, we were raised from the dead. Oh YES, and I will have to explain that later, but a good place to see this is in Ephesians 2:4-9.
So now Death has been fully paid for by Jesus, and defeated on our behalf! We have so much to rejoice about both at Christmas (his birth) and at Easter (his resurrection). He did for us a perfect work, and now there is not any work of the devil that can keep you from this loving God that Jesus came to demonstrate to us. Call out to Jesus and you will find “His Peace” given to you as a gift this Christmas. Just like the book says, “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men.” That’s why Jesus came! Sing those songs about Christ from your heart this Christmas Season. He is listening for even one voice who wants to rejoice in what he has done for each and everyone of us.
